It is possible that you will want to make information from your application available as an RSS stream that third parties may subscribe to. For example, an information portal could represent the names of the available portlets as an RSS feed for interested parties. They would then be aware when new functionality was made available to them. Probably the simplest way to create a valid RSS stream is to write a JavaServer Pages (JSP) page. You cannot make an RSS stream available directly from a portlet since a portlet by definition must be displayed as part of a valid HTML page, whereas an RSS stream is an XML document. The RSS stream must be made visible through a servlet (either created directly or as a JSP page). Although we normally use JSP to generate HTML there is nothing to stop us from using it to generate other document types. A simple example of an RSS 2.0 compliant JSP page follows:

In JavaScript, you will need a reference to the Silverlight control. One way of getting this is by capturing the Load event of the control, which raises references to the control as well as its current context. See 15 for more details on this. Once you have this reference, you can seek the item by using findName on the control s content.

While this is not an especially attractive piece of code, it clearly demonstrates the ease of generating an RSS feed. Figure 9-4 shows the generated feed in the RSS Viewer application.

Alternatively, we can generate our RSS directly from code within a servlet. You could hardcode the XML into your application much as we have done with the JSP page earlier. Alternatively, you could build a Document Object Model (DOM) to represent the XML page directly. Finally, you could use a library specifically oriented to RSS, such as RSS4J, available from www.churchillobjects.com/c/13005.html. RSS4J is yet another open source library, and allows you to model an RSS document rather than the rather more abstract XML document. The library permits you to build a RSS 0.9, 0.91, or 1.0 document, but does not currently allow you to build a 2.0-compliant document. Here is an example use of the library:

The center of the UML diagram is the Decorator class. It includes two types of relationships with the IComponent interface: Is-a The is-a relationship is shown by a dotted arrow from the Decorator to IComponent, indicating that Decorator realizes the IComponent interface. The fact that Decorator inherits from IComponent means that Decorator objects can be used wherever IComponent objects are expected. The Component class is also in an is-a relationship with IComponent, and therefore the client can use Component and Decorator objects interchangeably the heart of the Decorator pattern. Has-a The has-a relationship is shown by an open diamond on the Decorator, linked to IComponent. This indicates that the Decorator instantiates one or more IComponent objects and that decorated objects can outlive the originals. The Decorator uses the component attribute (of type IComponent) to invoke any replacement Operation it might wish to override. This is the way the Decorator pattern achieves its objective. The addedBehavior operation and the addedState attribute in the Decorator class are other optional ways of extending what is in the original Component objects. We ll look at some examples momentarily.
